Essential Oil Uses

Basic Formulas and Usage Guide

Essential oils can be used in a variety of applications.  The following methods are only guidelines.  There are many sources of  information available with formulas for these applications.  Some may recommend using a higher percentage of essential oils.  Victorie Incorporated places an emphasis on essential oil safety and will generally recommend a lower percentage of essential oils..  It is also very important to check the safety information about each essential oil you use.

Anointing Oil - Anointing Oils can be made using different concentrations of essential oils.  To make an anointing oil with a 10% essential oil concentration you will need to add 3 ML ( 60-75 drops) of essential oil or essential oil blend to approximately 1 oz. of a carrier oil.  Anointing oils do not need to have "in your face-strong" aroma to be effective.  **Remember you are using concentrated pure plant extracts.  Cinnamon, Cassia, Calamus and other oils are unsafe if used incorrectly.

Formula No.1:

Frankincense 35 Drops

Myrrh 35 Drops

Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 oz.

Perfume – You can add up to 25 drops of essential oil to 1/3 ounce of carrier oil.  There are two types of carrier oils that work well for perfumes, jojoba oil and fractionated coconut oil.  These carrier oils have a long shelf life and are nearly odorless.  Perfumes typically have dilution rates of 15-30% essential oil, 70-85% carrier oil or alcohol base.  Perfumes with a concentration of 30% essential oils are typically applied only to the pulse points on the body.

Q.  I want to make a perfume to smell like the Frangipani Flowers in Hawaii.  How come the Frangipani Absolute does not smell like Frangipani Flowers?

A.  Essential Oil, Absolutes and CO2 Extracts are concentrated plant material.  They will never smell exactly like the flower in bloom because these extracts are in a concentrated form.  You will need to dilute the oil to capture the more natural scent characteristic of the plant or flower.  Please note:  each extraction method also captures different chemical constituents of the plant or flower.  The CO2 extract will smell different than an essential oil or absolute.

Bath Salts – Add 5-8 drops of essential oil or essential oil blend to a 1/2  - 1 cup of bath salts, mix well and add to running bath water.  Dead sea salts, Epson salts, or magnesium flakes can be used.  Be sure to check the safety precautions about the essential oils.

Bath Oil – Add 5-10 drops of essential oils or essential oil blend to one ounce (tablespoon) of carrier oil.  Pour a small amount of the blend into a tub of running water.  Stir the water and oil together before getting in the tub.  Be sure to check the safety precautions about the essential oils added to the carrier oil.

Massage – Add 15 drops of essential oils to 1 ounce of carrier oil for a 2.5% dilution rate. There are many different types of carrier oils; sweet almond oil, olive oil, soybean oil, jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil, etc.  Be sure to check the safety precautions about the essential oils added to the carrier oil and shelf life of the fixed oils you chose.  You do not want to use a high ratio of essential oils in a massage formula.

Shower Gel, Lotion, Toners, or Shampoo – Essential oils can be added to any unscented base product.  Add essential oils or blend one drop at a time.  Essential oils are very potent and a little bit goes a long way.  Be sure to check the essential oil safety precautions about the essential oils.

Inhalation – You can add 1-2 drops of an essential oil on a tissue and inhale or simply inhale the oil straight from the bottle.

Diffuser – Add 6-10 drops of an essential oil or essential oil blend to an aromatherapy diffuser.

Room Mist Spray – Add 30-50 drops of an essential oil or essential oil blend to an 8 oz. spray bottle.  Fill the remainder of the bottle with distilled water.  Most spray bottles of this size will be plastic.  Plastic spray bottles can be used for this application.  However, remember the oils will erode the plastic bottle in time.  Be sure to check the essential oil safety precautions about the essential oils.  Some sources recommend adding more essential oils, however, the 30-50 drops should be sufficient.
